Exotic field trip recommendations?
« on: August 03, 2015, 01:56:08 PM »
I am hoping to plan a school trip somewhere 'life-changing' for Easter (or possibly Summer) 2017. I'm thinking probably about 10-15 mixed-age students (age 14-18). Not really a Geography trip as such, though of course hoping it will enrich their geographical understanding - human and physical. For various educational and practical reasons, I am thinking maybe tropical rainforest and/or coral reefs - but I'm not hugely restricted by that. Uganda, Costa Rica, Madagascar, Namibia, the Amazon, The Azores, Cuba, Tibet / Bhutan are the locations which have sprung to mind. If there was some 'social responsibility' aspect to the trip (building something, helping out in a school, etc.) that would be ideal.

Just wondering if anyone has been to one of these places, or somewhere similar, with a schools fieldwork company and could recommend?  Our kids aren't super wealthy, so £2000 is probably out of the question, unless they could do some fund raising for it.

The Specialist Travel Company (http://www.thestc.co.uk/) has come up on google searches, but I've never heard of them - anyone know about them? Discover the World are another I can find...

Our biology department regularly use Operation Wallacea and are currently in Dominica doing conservation and the a week diving. They've done Indonesia and South Africa before.  The boys school in town have done World Challenge a number of times. I think both run a bit higher in terms of budget though, but as trips are tailor made I'm sure you could talk to them and find a suitable destination.

I took a group of geography teachers to Bolivia and Peru in 2012 with The Specialist Travel Company - they were very helpful, especially Adrian, who is a geographer! The tour was personalised for us! We had superb guides throughout!

We took three trips to N. Kenya - the Marich Pass.

Not what I'd call exotic although you can stay overnight at Lake Nakuru en route from Nairobi, but life changing for students' outlook because they are living without electricity (as least when I last went about 12 years ago!) alongside the Pokot people, seeing how very important primary school is to the children, how few material possessions homes have etc.  It's in a Rift Valley location.

Thank you everyone, some food for thought there. Appreciate it very much, especially as I don't contribute on SLN much these days. Thanks Kate for that recommendation.  :)
