HDI similar to GDP

Human Development Index HDI is advanced as being a better indicator than “GDP per capita” in measuring the progress of Nations.
BUT look at a plot of the correlation between HDI and GDP/capita or all countries in Gapminder World

I'm a little confused. Would we not be more surprised if there wasn't an excellent correlation between the two given one makes up a 1/3 of the result of the other? Isn't the point that it highlights some of the outliers from the GDP/development model?

Agree with Tris - looks about right. You can pick out places like oil rich states which have relatively high GDP, but relatively low HDI e.g. Qatar.
