geography and spirituality
« on: May 03, 2012, 09:35:26 AM »
Guys I'm on my knees with this......................(literally)

All the subjects in school have been asked to submit their audit of how spirituality is represented in their curriculum-  I have a few ideas, but they don't amount to much. Have you been asked to do an audit?  Can you give me any examples of links made between the two......

any help will be greatly appreciated
regards
Phil

Just off the top of my head:

religions affect on decisions e.g. use of condoms, death rates being impacted by suspicion of modern medicine and using witch doctors instead.

Migration of people for religious events e.g. mecca, washing in the ganges.

location of spiritual monuments e.g. christ in rio, macchu pichu

Issues of morality and fairness, appropriate development - who is it for, attitudes of religions to the environment ( to be exploited, or is it sacred etc), general issues of ethics, population control issues ( forced sterilisation in 1970s India stand out!)

materialism versus sustainability

what makes us happy - do we need more and more?

how should people treat each other - humanism, what do religions say

Protestantism and the rise of Capitalism ( the rich being regarded as worthy and deserving  as 'wealth creators' versus the 'feckless', dependent poor who create their own problems - currently there is a revival in this sort of Victorian 'spirituality'!

What about 'awe and wonder' type geography

I think spirituality is so much more than religion.
For me, that great connectedness with the universe/spirit/higher power/god that one can feel when the 'awe and wonder'of a place is felt is a spiritual thing. Also the wonderful diversity and connectedness of people.
So I guess I'm saying that if we are 'mindful' when we teach / study geography, much of what we do could be considered spiritual.

If you want something concerete as an example, how about the 'Earth from Air' photos?

I think I may have a document at home, as working in a Catholic school we had to produce this. If I find it I will email it to you.
This is because of the SMSC agenda in the Ofsted 2012 criteria.
Does your school have a Mission Statement that you can build on...ours includes Gospel Values, Recognising and Celebrating each person's individual talents and abilities, the Christian World, Caritas (caring), fairness, justice, etc....

As Judith says it is wider than just religion...have a look at the new Ofsted criteria and Google SMSC
