Games - these have been added to mainly from wonderful people here on SLN!
Shanty town game - 30 minutes to build a shack using scraps for work, if you have the insight to agree terms of payment beforehand, to protect your baby (pocket tissue) before the rains (watering can) comes. I have a comprehensive (!) lesson plan if needed.
Jelly baby game - initially designed for KS4 but I use it with KS5 as an introduction and refresher to population - get the students to sketch their population pyramids after each event gives some highly entertaining results

Quiz, Quiz, Trade - revision activity or can be used to teach a short case study.
Have a 10 question quiz, using white boards. Give out article, textbook page etc get students to find the answers to the questions. Score quiz. Give each student a number corresponding to a quiz question and get them to write the question and answer on a white board. Give 5-10 mins they have to quiz, quiz and trade boards as many times as they can in the time allocated. Sit the quiz again and mark up their progress.

Hi Tony,

Have tried to access the 'editing option' a number of times on both links from both of my email accounts but still to no avail.  so thought I would add my tips on here for now:

Two Gun Texas

A simple game to encourage studnets to find places using an Atlas as fast as they can - great for getting them to understad that there is more than one way to use it!

Really simple: Tell students to make a gun shape with one hand, they are to find the place when said as fast as they can, then place the tip of thier gun (fingers on the place and be the fastest to put their other hand up to win)

Playing the game:

Students work in pairs - start off with Atals cosed on desk and they are both stadning up behind chairs.
Teacher says the name of a country, city, town etc depending how hard you want to make the task.
Studnets then have to quickly find the place in the Atalas, put thier gun (fingers) on it and sit down with thier other hand up.

Fastest pair wins!  Students love the game - have played it with all ages!

Marie  ;D

And another good game...

Dizzy Directions:

Put each of the compass directions on a different wall in the class room
Students then have to stand up and turn as fast as they can to face the correct wall when a direction is called out by the teacher.
The slowest students or those that turn the wrong way are out, they then help to watch for who is out next.
Keep playing until you have one winner - you can make the game harder by using 8 point on the compass.

Great for spatial awareness

Marie

I don't think I have permission to edit it but thought i would offer up something...

Role Play - I had forgotten how much fun these activities can be! My Year 8s really got into the trading trainers game (From ChristianAid - http://learn.christianaid.org.uk/YouthLeaderResources/trainers.aspx - also links to other simulations). Of course Noel developed this further, in the legendary 'Sweatshirts' - http://www.juicygeography.co.uk/sweatshirts.htm

A very powerful tool to encourage empathy and a critical understanding of complex issues.
