Reports just coming through...

"A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Haiti, rocking the capital and sparking a tsunami alert for neighbouring states. The tremor hit at 1653 (2153 GMT), about 15km (10m) south-west of Port-au-Prince, the US Geological Survey said. Haiti's envoy to the US said it was a "catastrophe of major proportions" as reports from the capital spoke of casualties and damage."

Useful looking site with a team out mapping for the relief efforts - emergency mapping by Mapaction http://mapaction.org/deployments.html    They also cover Sumatra quake, and lots of floods and hurricanes.  Neat GIS application  Smiley

I have put together a ppt and thinking skills activity based on the reasons for the high death toll. Ironically my year 9s were tomorrow just about to start three lessons on the tsunami of 2004 so i have quickly changed plans!
I plan to print out the slides 4-8 on individual A4 sheets and give to pupils in groups for them to order and explain their reasons.
Please feel free to download and use slides 2-3 to  add accurate facts about the earthquake (deaths, injured homeless etc...)

Don't know if anyone can use this at all (maybe A Level???), but Pat Robertson (err, American hard core conservative christian tv evangelical type, ex presidential candidate etc...) is getting into loonspud territory:

Pat Robertson: Haiti "Cursed" After "Pact to the Devil"

Might be interesting for some, just to consider how different peoples view stuff like this.
