Happy New Year and 1st February upload day
« on: January 01, 2010, 07:15:54 PM »
Happy New Year to you all. I hope that you have had a great Christmas holiday.

Following suggestions from a number of colleagues I have now closed the 1st December 2009 file sharing folder. This is so that we can begin to start arranging the resources in the folder in a more logical manner. All the materials are still downloadable from the 4shared folder - http://www.4shared.com/dir/23579760/3f4bbe5b/SLN_1st_December_2009.html - and Kate has already started to upload and categorise some of the materials on the main SLN site - http://www.sln.org.uk/geography/december_1st_download_day.htm

There are an amazing variety of top quality resources available in the 1st December folder - there are 241 files and folders that have been shared! Well done and thank you to everyone who took part and shared their materials - I think that this kind of generosity is what makes SLN such a special community. Thank you also to everyone who posted to say 'thanks' to colleagues who had created the files. The most popular files to date are the Christmas Quizzes, which I am sure kept thousands of children and their teachers entertained in the run up to the holidays.

As the December upload project was so successful, I'm suggesting that we do it again! I have made a new folder - SLN 1st February 2010 - in the same account at 4shared, so please do upload your files. The link is: http://www.4shared.com/dir/26986045/87915688/SLN_February_2010.html - please try to upload something by 1st February if you can.

The same 'rules' apply as before:

1. I know this sounds obvious, but name your files sensibly so that people can see quickly and easily whether or not they want to download them!

2. There is no way of telling who has uploaded things to the folder. If you want to put your name to your work, include it in the file name (eg. Ecohouse KS3 project by Katharine). If you wish to remain anonymous, that's fine.

3. If you are uploading a set of resources (eg. a PowerPoint, lesson plan and worksheet that are all used for the same lesson; a scheme of work with lesson plans and resources) please put them in a folder on your computer and zip the folder. You then upload the zipped folder and it makes it much easier for people to download quickly. The resources will also stay together as a package, helping people to use them more effectively.

4. If you download a file from the 4shared folder and you like it, please post here to say thank you. It will only take a few seconds of your time to do so but it will make a world of difference to the kind person who shared the file with you.

Thanks Katharine for setting that up - look forward to seeing even more people adding resources. It has revitalised the sharing resources aspect of the SLN Forum.  :)

I've been trying to upload a load of stuff but it is not playing ball. I will try from school tomorrow, if I get a chance, as I would finally like to start "paying back" for all the help and assistance I have received over the last couple of years from other slners.

I've added a file called 'Butler Lives'.  It is kind of animated as you click through the panes gradually revealling different terms [white does not show on blue when projected for me] At the end is a sheet of six models.  The children print these out in colour for homework and then chop and add them to the relevant Case Studies adding the position to the curve.  Designed for the new AQA A spec it could be applied eleswherere, we will certainly use it with the Interactions book in yr 9. Enjoy.

Just some feedback for the moderators.....

For a number of reasons (and for the time being), I am always likely to view and download more than I can upload.  That said, one of the main reasons for not sharing more in the past was that I did not have a share account.  Now I know I could easily sort this out... but to have these accounts for December and February have really worked for people like me.  I am probably not the worst innovator as it goes ... but  I certainly didn't think I had the resources worthy of sharing and I am still way behind on the blog front etc...  These links have enabled me to share a number of files and folders of work in recent weeks and to see that people have downloaded my resources has certainly given me great satisfaction and I am now thinking of adding more when they are finished.  Therefore, can I say a big thank you to whoever had the idea for this.

Lastly, I was wondering whether the share link could have folders within in KS3, KS4, KS5 and general teaching and learning.  This might help me (and others) to save a little time searching for work for the appropriate key stage.  Can we then upload into these folders as we go?  I add comments, resources and links to the nings and particularly the Edxecel A level ning... its just that sometimes it is easier to share through these links...

Thanks

I've just added a presentation on Pacuare Eco Lodge in Costa Rica, the website which supports it is very good.  The photographs are from our physics guy at school and his wife, the primary specialist.  I hope they are of some use to others.

A good selection of resources is building up in the folder. Thanks to everyone who has contributed. I will definitely follow Ginger Wookie's idea next time for the 1st April (!!!) upload day. I think it might be a little tricky to change the file structure half way through this session.

Hi Guys, just wanted to say a massive thank you for creating this amazing site, it's an absolute treasure trove! I'm basically a graduate teacher in Australia, as I came over here soon after I'd finished my PGCE in the UK around 18 months ago.

Visiting this site certainly makes me feel like I'm still connected to the real Geographical community.
