Are iGCSEs harder than GCSEs?
« on: February 22, 2017, 08:01:40 AM »
Morning,

I've got 6 students who haven't done CA and so I'm entering them for iGCSEs

My Head is asking whether this might be better for some of our challenging students who do not attend and disrupt lessons (and so have been removed from lessons)

So, from your experience, are iGCSEs more difficult than regular GCSEs?

Thank you for your help!!

Hi
We do AQA Level 1/2 certificate (the equivalent of an IGCSE). It is almost the same content as AQA A but with a third paper on skills and decision making. It is no easier/harder than a GCSE, just different I feel. I have done Edexcel IGCSE in the past with an international group of students and that was tough, there is only 1 enormous 3+ hour exam at the end (if I remember correctly).
Hope that helps!

In our experience NO they are not harder in fact more straightforward and with PROPER fieldwork if you go for CIE but isnt this summer the last that are allowed in state schools?

Thanks for your replies.

- Yes it is, but this is a sticking plaster solution for students who have not done CA

Lots of content, F/H levels of entry but no SPAG marks - I've made a course full of resources on www.geographypods.com - help yourself.  :)

I agree with the person up thread who said IGCSEs are more straightforward.

AQA 1/2 certificate - exam cohort this summer (2017) is the last of this syllabus. AQA are then binning the IGCSE for Geog.

Edexcel - current year 10 are the last through on the current syllabus. It then changes from 1 X 3 hour paper to 2 papers. They have also changed the grading system to the 1-9. The new syllabus is not much different from the old syllabus BUT you need to do 2 lots of field work.

CIE - the only one I am not teaching at the moment!

Good luck!
