ipads within the Geography Classroom

Hi everyone,
As a new Head of Department I am looking to promote the use of ipads within the Geography classroom.
There are thousands of apps available, but was wondering whether some of you have had more success with some apps than others?

I look forward to hearing some of your suggestions and collaborating with you.

Many thanks for your recommendation. I will have a look at it.

Have you or know of anyone had much use with VLR headsets? Seen a clip of it and it seems a really good learning tool within the classroom where virtual fieldtrips can really bring the teahcing & learning alive!

What wondering whether there was an "app" linking to VLR headsets to different places?

Thanks

We make a lot of use of Skitch on fieldwork for annotating images.
The OS Locate app is great on fieldwork too for generating 6 figure grid references and altitude information.
We have a subscription to EduCreations, but there is a free account too - it allows students to create narrated videos using images and text. The videos embed nicely in our VLE (Moodle) so its a great revision tool (works on fieldwork for recording methods and locations).
We also have an app called Learning tools which has things like traffic lights, A/B/C/D which is great for quick in class quizzes.
We use an atlas app, but I can't think what it is called and I'm at home not school, to check!
i-nigma for scanning QR codes.
Padlet for sharing ideas in a classroom.
Clickview (as we have a school subscription).
Collector for ArCGIS  and fieldwork.
Quiz apps; UK, World and USA - kids love these!

Hi there,

Yes Skitch is a great app and have used it several times, would highly recommend it to anyone. Thanks for the other recommendations, will definitely try them out!

You had much use with VLR headsets and using different location apps to explore a range of different places? Our SLT are keen to develop this side of digital technology- especially the opportunities with virtual fieldtrips in the Geography classroom.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I've got a collection of links and resources on Using IPads in the classroom - don't know if there is anything useful here.. http://www.pearltrees.com/robgeog/ipads-education/id9081019
