General Discussion / Re: GCSE Geography reform
« on: November 07, 2013, 08:06:12 PM »

The curriculum content requires students to undertake fieldwork, but the related knowledge and skills can be assessed by written exam set and marked by the exam board. We therefore propose that all assessment for the reformed geography GCSE should be by written exams alone and that the total assessment time should be no less than 3.5 hours.

Delighted with this and it can't come soon enough.

Maybe it is another move to limit the chance of students actually passing exams by reducing their teaching time by a month

Our students normally finish for study leave around this time so it won't affect our actual teaching time.  For some of the students - and possibly some of the less able and C/D students it could actually play to our advantage - hopefully for some for some of them the work will still be fresh in their brains and they will have less time to get distracted by all the other exams (or the distraction of GTA 5); I still think a minority of students - especially boys - do almost zero revision prior to the exams.

Well it isn't going to happen and I wouldn't fancy doing his job for a term.

I'd say your chances of contributing to this textbook are looking slim.  :-\

Although, just thinking about it some more, it does mean our current year 12 now only have one chance to retake the Skills unit (AQA) instead of 3 opportunities as before.  This is bound to have some impact on our results.

Makes a lot of sense I think.  We've already dropped our January exams in geography from this year.  January exams waste valuable time.
