General Discussion / Apple Macbook - what can you do?
« on: September 16, 2011, 06:29:24 PM »
Hi guys, need some ideas.  Our school have invested in a bank of apple macbooks and I have bought one home to 'have a play' this week.  I have never used a macbook before so does anybody have any ideas what I can do with it.  I have some instructions for podcasting with garageband but would like some inspiration from any apple users out there....

General Discussion / GCSE OCR B Get Ahead - INSET
« on: November 18, 2010, 09:10:48 PM »
I was at the Get Ahead INSET today and thought it was useful how the chief examiner explained how each question is structured:

3 marks for skills e.g. OS map reading, graph reading, photograph analysis. (point marking)

2 marks for knowledge e.g. definitions (point marking)

3 x 4 mark questions testing knowledge and understanding - (point marking) These are marked either 4x1 (4 relevant points, 1 mark each) or 2x2 (2 relevant points and development)

8 mark case study (level marked) (Will always have opportunity to develop 3 ideas)
L1 (1-3 marks) 3 simple points
L2 (4-6 marks) 3 developments of the simple points. (Can reach L2 without making 3 simple points)
L3 (7-8 marks) Given for place specific detail e.g. dates, specific facts e.g. no. dead etc. (Cannot reach L3 without 3 developed points)

I thought this will come in really useful when training pupils for the terminal exam.

General Discussion / GCSE OCR B SDME 20 January 2011
« on: November 12, 2010, 05:50:51 PM »
We’re all going on a summer holiday–how can tourism affect the physical environment?

Well, it's that time of year again, we get to open the booklets on 25th November.  I'm guessing it's going to be on sustainable tourism.

Does anybody have any good sites, resources, video clips etc to share?

I will post what I find as and when.

General Discussion / Which GCSE spec is best?
« on: October 05, 2010, 07:48:04 PM »
Hi all,
Just wondered which GCSE spec do you do and what are the pros and cons associated with it?  I'm thinking of changing but not sure to what yet.  I currently do OCR B but after a very disappointing set of results I am having second thoughts.  Please post below and let me know what you think, I really want to gauge people's opinions on this.  Thanks for your time :)

« on: April 23, 2010, 11:51:53 PM »
Hi all,
I have received my copy of the teacher's notes today and was wondering if anybody is up for a bit of collaboration?  I am planning on doing a mock exam and a glossary sheet for the pupils this weekend and will share when I'm done.  It looks like the decision will be about the Fiat Factory in Brazil.

General Discussion / WJEC AS Hydrology help Environment Agency website
« on: September 14, 2009, 02:58:05 PM »
Hi
I would like my students to 'construct an annual river regime graph for UK using Environmental Agency data on R Thaw, S Wales' as detailed in the teacher's guide for WJEC AS hydrology unit.  However, after spending my free lesson searching for the data I have given up.  Can anyone point me in the right direction to this data?
Thanks

Hi everyone!  I was wondering is there a way to download vids from youtube so I can then save them and use in lessons as our server blocks out youtube.  If you can do this, does anybody have a dummies guide on how to do it?  Thanx in advance.

General Discussion / GIS - What do you use
« on: April 28, 2009, 07:11:12 PM »
Hi all, our school has no GIS at the moment and with the increasing demand of GCSE specs/new KS3/A level we are looking into purchasing some out of next year's capitation.  What do you use? What are the good/bad points?  What do you use it for? Prices?  Any information on the above questions would be most helpful.  Thank You.
