General Discussion / OT - personal question - Has any one been to Gambia?
« on: January 14, 2011, 07:06:43 PM »
Hi all

Am in need of some sun and something to look forward to for the Easter holls.  Have seen an sustainable eco lodge in Gambia where you can hire a roundhouse for £200.  It looks amazing.  Flights reasonable too.

Just I don't know anyone who has been or has had any experience there.

Any advice???

General Discussion / Any exam tips for GCSE Edexcel A?
« on: January 11, 2011, 06:44:45 PM »
Hi all

I am putting my Y10s into the year 10 Edexcel A exam for the first time in January. I am new to Edexcel and am trying to prepare some revision TECHNIQUE lessons - not knowledge.

Does anyone have any tips to share that I can pass onto my students?  I will use some of the model answers released by Edexcel but any other tips would be appreciated.

Kind regards

General Discussion / So the curriculum planning meetings begin....
« on: December 08, 2010, 06:12:42 PM »
I have to attend an emergency curriculum planning meeting on Monday to discuss Curriculum 2011 and, among other things, whether Geog and Hist should come out of the options to meet the new Bacc requirements.

Our students currently have compulsory ICT and a technology option so things might change there as the time may need to be released to allow for a Language and a Humanities subject.

I need to have my wits about me to make sure I get the best outcomes possible for Geography/History.

Any advice out there??  Initial concerns that might help me focus??

Will let you know outcomes, if interested, and we can compare SLT reactions.

General Discussion / CHRISTMAS QUIZ - for all to share. xx
« on: November 29, 2010, 08:27:38 PM »
Hiya all, as my annual thanks to everyone on SLN I have made a quiz for Xmas.  Lasts an hour.  It is called Xmas 2010.  There are 2 MP3 files and they should be hyperlinked to the right bits, if not you will need to redo the hyperlinks.

Shout if you are not sure how to.

Please let me know if any bits don't work too!

PS, I am embarrassed to admit I had to buy the Jedwood MP3 on amazon - hope they don't appear in my 'because you liked.....' page!!! :)

General Discussion / Help please - tourism on Benidorm and/or Blackpool
« on: November 22, 2010, 10:22:21 PM »
Hiya everyone

I have swapped my Y10s to follow Edexcel A and am currently doing the tourism unit. As this is the first time I have taught tourism in ages, I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good programmes on tourism in Benidorm and/or Blackpool?

Basically showng pre-boom, growth and then decline/regeneration attempts - basically the Butler Model.

Much appreciated.

We have just had the delights of another 'learning walk' and a major critism was that kids could not say their target level, current level and how to improve.

Now my students have a record book in the front of their exercise book that THEY record targets in, assessment levels and a summary of advice given. They all had these but could not on the spot regurgitate for someone coming in. ::) ::)

Apart from getting them to chant it, does anyone have any snazzy techniques they could share as I felt foolish even though they all have the info to hand,

General Discussion / Urban Exploration Forums
« on: October 04, 2010, 06:37:31 PM »

Hi there

Have just been mooching about on an urban exploration forum.  I had no idea they existed - but feel they could be a goldmine for geographical images.

I just explored the industrial sites section - and focussed on Middlesbrough. The threads are fascinating.

This is the one I am looking at now, but if you google it, there are LOADS.

Does anyone else use them??

General Discussion / Job in an academy - advice please!!
« on: September 26, 2010, 06:10:34 PM »
Hi all

I have seen a job advertised for Hof Hums in an academy near where I live.  The area is tough but early reports are that the academy is good.

On a personal note, I was wondering if anyone would have any advice for me?  My OH and I are trying for a baby, would asking about maternity conditions be abit of a bad move???  But I need to know!!

Pros - cuts my commute by 2/3rds, new challenge, new kids, new people etc
Cons - am HoHums now, but on a tad less pay.

Does anyone have any comments to help me decide???

Hi all

Have got a mental block!!  Am being observed on Tues teaching a small Y7 nurture group (reading ages between 6 and 10). We have done the points of compass and using a key.  We should be moving onto map symbols and practising compass directions.

Does anyone have any nice ideas that they are willing to share?  We have no ICT but an IWB.

Many thanks

General Discussion / ITT Geography students - quick question
« on: September 07, 2010, 07:35:27 PM »

I have registered for a geog ITT student this year.  When I asked my school about the money that comes in and where it goes (ie the department) I was told that school takes a 25% cut for 'admin'.  Under our old HT 100% went into departments.

Is it me or is that outrageous??  What do others experience??  Are there any guidelines??

Thanks

General Discussion / Homework
« on: July 12, 2010, 07:56:58 PM »

I have just sat through a Heads of Faculty meeting where homework was discussed. We have a serious issue across every subject in our school of teachers (1) actually setting homework and (2) it being beyond low level/vague tasks.

I really need to get this sorted for Sept, I want to inspire with ideas but my brain is dead and I am shattered - can anyone comment on how your school/department tackles it?

Could anyone share some good practise - does not need to be Geog necessarily?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

As a token of thanks to all the SLNers who have kept me sane this year I have been a busy bee.

No idea how but I managed to make an end of year quiz - lasts 60 minutes.  I need to upload it to SLN 4share - any ideas how?? (Katharine - are you there??)

It is a powerpoint and a music mp3 - usual style, 7 rounds.  The music is hyperlinked to the powerpoint.

Came from a template on here ages ago.

I hope it is of some use folks - have a happy summer SLNers. You are a wonderful support to me.

Hiya everyone

Having nearly taught Yr one of WJEC I am going back over to properly plan and resource my scheme of work ready for September.  I will upload and share everything I make on here. Was just wondering if anyone had anything they could share to help me?

I plan to adapt what I used for Avery Hill and finally sort my unfiled GCSE folders, well, that is the intention anyway!!

Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / VERY old rainforests LANDMARKS programme
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:01:48 PM »

Hiya everyone

I am currently trying to update all my 'classic' videos onto DVD. I gave our science technician my only copy of the old Landmarks programme called 'Destroying the Forest'.  It is probably 20 years old now but covers the types of destruction perfectly.

However, instead of recording it to DVD, she recorded over it with a blank screen ::) ::) ::).  I have managed to remove myself from the ceiling long enough to type this begging request.

FULL costs, plus a Wispa, will be supplied to the saviour who may find this classic in their collection for me to share. ;D

Many thanks in advance.
