General Discussion / Am I being too political?
« on: September 16, 2011, 07:08:09 PM »
I am really trying to stay positive this year and concentrate on enjoying Geography without getting bogged down in my Head of Faculty admin ....

So, was thinking about offering an after school weekly 'earth watch' debating club. Students watch a DVD or read newspaper articles on issues that I think they really need to know about but don't fit in the schemes of work - for example the dolphin slaughter of Taiji which is happening at the moment, or the sea shepherd/Japan whaling conflict, or exploitation of coffee workers in Africa etc etc

I have loads of cracking documentaries and films that I never get chance to show as it is not on specs.

My idea would be watch/learn, debate, and then write letters/deliver assemblies if appropriate etc.

I would not have an agenda and I would see fair representation of both sides of controversial issues but do I have the right or will I get into hot water?

Evening all.

In addition to the other fantastic end of year quizzes offered here, I have updated my usual format of film, tv, music, news etc

I will zip the files tomorrow and try to upload to the 4share account tomorrow.  Hope it works for everyone.

Last year someone added rounds which was brilliant so feel free to modify etc.

Have a restful well deserved summer fellow lovely SLNers  :-* :-* :-* :-*

Evening all!

My GCSE numbers have rocketed from just 30 in Year 10 to 110 next year - ironically after years of promoting Geog and numbers dropping I sat back this year and voila !  (not that the SMT pushing the EBacc had anything to do with it!).

Anyhoo....

This year I am taking the Y10s on a residential to Malham Tarn Field Centre for one night to do tourism.  The HT wants a residential that really gets them passionate about Geog for this big cohort.  So, was wondering if anyone had an ideas?  I think I would prefer to stay in UK and subsidise heavily those from poorer homes.

Was thinking of combining some outdoor activities in there.  Can anyone inspire me! or recommend good places/centres?  Obviously the area will be dependant on the new Edexcel A coursework titles out soon.

Hi everyone

Just had to share that I have had a fantastic sunny day with 30 Year 10s studying coasts. Been to Redcar, Saltburn, Skinningrove (best chips!) and Runswick Bay.  Looked at everything from longshore drift to erosion, WCP to caves and mass movement.

Kids were chattering about doing this every day as they learnt more that a month in the classroom!

Have been really down of late about the performance of my Y10s in the Jan exam, so hopefully this lifted their confidence and renewed their enthusiasm for Geog - it certainly renewed mine.

Don't we teach the best subject around!

Fab day!

General Discussion / Nice ideas for saying goodbye to Tutor Group
« on: March 30, 2011, 05:11:54 PM »
Hiya

I have had my TG for 5 years and they are smashing. Just wondered if anyone can share any nice farewell ideas they have used that worked well.

We are going for a meal to pizza hut (their choice was to go posh :-)) so I want to give them a wee memento of their time at school.

General Discussion / Prog on water supply in Costas/Spain
« on: March 27, 2011, 08:07:04 PM »
Hi Guys

Does anyone know of a decent prog that highlights the water pressure issue in Spain - use of golf courses and swimming pools etc?

Thanks in advance, Helen x

I am busy writing lessons for Watery World section of Edexcel A. I need a 30-45 minute prog showing the contamination of the amazon by mining and resource exploitation.

I have Kemp does Amazon (but need to watch it again to check which bits!) and the gorgeous Bruce Parry's tribe - any other particular recommendations out there people would like to share?

Also, was there a prog once called 'A world without water' and is it any good?

General Discussion / disappointing Y10 results Edexcel A
« on: March 10, 2011, 08:26:05 AM »
Hi Everyone

My Year 10s are doing the Edexcel A, this is the first time I have taught it.  My colleague and I have loved the course but our results are really disappointing. This has rocked our confidence.

I heard something about a results analysis package.  Anyone know where I can get that?

General Discussion / Does anyone teach WJEC? Help!!
« on: March 06, 2011, 06:04:39 PM »
Hiya everyone.

My Year 11 are currently studying the WJEC Spec B that was the old Avery Hill.  They sat the exam in Y10 and very few are resitting as they got their target grades in Y10.

I have finished teaching theme 3.  I need to prepare them for problem solving (not a problem) and basically revise everything from Y10 and Y11 in case it is part of the problem solving paper.

I am just stuck where to start - did a basic lesson on the structure of the paper and the matrix, I will do some basic map skill revision too.

Just wondered if there is anyone else out there at a loss as to how to fill the remainder of this time???  Any advice??

My year 10s are doing Edexcel and it is sooo much better - will be glad when this is no longer around my neck!!!

Thanks in advance....

General Discussion / Future of Citizenship - can anyone help me please?
« on: February 08, 2011, 09:03:07 PM »
Hi SLNers

Our SMT are reviewing our KS3 curriculum and are planning to remove Citizenship lessons from Y8 and Y9 (it is currently embedded into Integrated Hums in Y7).

I am not sure where we stand with Citizenship now with the new Govt. Is it still to be taught and reported on?

Can anyone point me in the direction of who to ask??

Thanks everyone

General Discussion / Something to make you chuckle on a Monday...
« on: January 31, 2011, 07:55:42 PM »

I was teaching UK population density today and held up the UK density map out of the Connections book - you know the one...

The class hooted with laughter as it had a massive cock drawn on it with the words "you love it" across the bottom and I hadn't checked it before showing them - oh dear!

Never blushed so much in ages  :o :o

General Discussion / Coastal flooding example/resources help!
« on: January 31, 2011, 07:51:17 PM »
Hi all

I am trying to write a scheme of work for Y10 for GCSE Edexcel A - coastal landscapes.

I have reached the bit:

"prediction and prevention of coastal flooding by forecasting, building design, planning and education - how the effects of coastal flooding are reduced through planning before the event, taught through a range of examples".

So, can anyone advise?  Are there any good TV programmes, articles or case studies you could recommend as I am scratching my head at the moment.  Only have 2/3 lesson time on scheme for this so need to be tight and the examples not too big - need to be small and specific.

So, not a big ask!!  Happy to share finished SoW if anyone can help.

Also, I teach oop North, so any Northern examples gratefully received :-)

Kind regards, Helen xx

General Discussion / Department Handbook
« on: January 24, 2011, 05:40:37 PM »
In the recent thread about subject inspection it has been highlighted that an effective handbook is looked for by inspectors.

As mine is a few years old now, and so are probably others on here - I am going to make it a priority to improve my department (Faculty) handbook.

Currently mine is stored on the school IT central resource library at work in a series of folders and relevant info gets saved/viewed in the folders.

I wonder if people would be willing to share a template of headings or those that had been recently through a subject inspection - could shed some light on what made their handbook successful?

Many thanks
Helen x
