General Discussion / CA: sustainable urban areas
« on: October 16, 2010, 08:14:58 PM »
Can anyone help?  I have one student who is currently not attending school but wants to complete her GCSE in Geography.  She has completed unit 1 of the new AQA B course and I have suggested doing the short course whihc means she just needs to complete the controlled assessment.  If I can get permission for this to be supervised by an external agency I need her to complete some basic fieldwork and a write-up.  The rest of the cohort have done coasts after a residential but thsi is not practical for this student.  The urban title is abotu sustainability in urban areas.  She could do this but as I don't teach this unit my mind is not engaging.  Can anyone suggest a title they've looked at, or have any resources on a similar title?  I am thinking something along the lines of access to recycling facilities perhaps??  Should be lots of seconday information and mapping provision should be easy combined with a questionnaire or environmental quality index I think.

So, the new geography teacher has elbow patches on his jacket - this'll do wonders for my rep at school!

General Discussion / Help with Excel!
« on: August 27, 2010, 01:30:36 PM »
I am trying to out together a *simple* spreadsheet which has kids names in column A and then along each row I want to be able to enter the number of minutes they spend on the controlled assessment each lesson, so basically a set of numbers between 1-60.  All I want Excel to do is add these to give a cumulative time.  Sounds simple but I'll be blown if I can do it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Let's try out grouply as a new host for the ning.  If you already a member you should be receiving an email shortly with details.  New people always welcome.

Ning seems to have transferred across intact along with all attachments.  Looks a little different and things not always in the same places exactly but seems to be a good alternative to paying a subscription.

Off to Switzerland with a group of students over the May half term.  One of the Year 9s is having a birthday - any suggestions for a silly little geographcial present we can get for her?

Just been watching today's episode (for my sins!) and heard the most fantastic quote from Carol McGiffin: "I don't do porn I do maps" when talking about sat navs!  Classic, perhaps not for use in school though!

General Discussion / Switzerland Help!
« on: March 23, 2010, 06:46:45 PM »
Off to Switzerland on a fieldtrip and I'm putting together my Powerpoint for the parents meeting.  I was just trying to find details on travel adapters (being a girls school we need our hairdryers and straighteners working at all times!).  There seems to be some discussion about whihc adapter to take - a regular European one or a special Switzerland only one.  Any suggestions from others who've been would be much appreciated!

General Discussion / EXCEL
« on: December 05, 2009, 06:10:47 PM »
I have an excel spreadsheet which adds up all my mock marks for Y11.  After calculating the total, the spreadsheet turns the total mark into a grade using pre-set grade boundaries.  I've then got a column which tells me whether the student is above/on/below target - again Excel calculates this BUT it can't cope with A* grades - how can I tell Excel that an A* grade is higher than an A?  e.g. a student who achieves an A but has a target of an A* is returned as above target according to Excel!  Help!  I've tried using AA rather than A* but it still thinks A is higher!
