Geography teacher required for September see TES this Friday, May 8th, for details.

Thanks for the thoughts. I suspect I sat in on some meetings with you where it was discussed about the submissions to QCA.

We are aware that the student is entitled to the time in both the cases put forward BUT it would be nice to find out HOW this is to be managed. If a student is doing some CA work and missed 5 hours of the dedicated class time then that 5 hours has to be found and supervised by a teacher somewhere and sometime. Yet at no point have I seen any consideration of how this will be done. If they are special needs that means that another 6 hours 15 has to be found to supervise. Does this count as part of directed time etc. etc. The point raised was about the extra time staff would have to find and provide, extra lunch times and after school sessions and not about the initial supervision of the class task.

I have discussed the CA only today with external providers and unfortunately it does appear as though the students are going to get a much reduced geographical diet. Discussions with several centres I believe involve considering doing just a single day fieldwork for GCSE coursework and then a whole day write up whilst on the residential field trip. Where is the quality of Geographical experience in that?

Not an easy one even if you have a balanced timetable for both groups. Interested to see the lack of awareness that seems prevelent on this one as many geography departments I have spoken to say that they are ahead of the game in terms of information on this but still need some clarification on how to manage it.

It is unfortunate that geographers did not put up a stronger fight on this one when the issues were raised, and quite vigorously, on this forum some time ago. It is not going to be easy and no one has yet told me how we manage the special needs.

"What if"
- a students mid timetables allocation for the CA is absent for two weeks
- a student gets 25% extra time for special needs

When and how are these going to be supported and who is going to cover their supervision.

If a situation comes up in the future where we have a chance to make a change can I urge all on here to make their voice heard, don't leave it to someone else !

Also worth considering for the WJEC A2 research topic ! Mentioned it to the current Y12 today and told them to get collecting cuttings.

General Discussion / The iceman cometh?

Nearly crashed the car this morning ...... a report from the BBC stated that sunspot activity was at it lowest for a century and then finished with indications that the last time sunspot activity was so low it was followed by ............ the Little Ice Age. Normal service had been resumed by this afternoon as the report stated that sunspot activity was at it lowest for a century but ......... this would not stop global warming. Phew, that's a relief.

Examiners beware ! On discussing this with my Y12 group today they directed me to the front page of The Sun .......... http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2387203.ece

General Discussion / Re: Highbury and The Emirates Stadium

Hi Katherine,

Can Arsenal cater for 200 students? We had looked at doing the same but found that the most they could handle on a single visit was, I think, 35 (at the time we requested) and so there would be the issue of what to do with the other students whilst the 35 were having a tour etc.

I don't suspect the old higbury will be open access ..... looks good though whilst passing on the train.

Let us know if you are successful with the visit.
