Hi all,

We are looking to appoint an outstanding Geography Teacher here at Upper Shirley. The role offers an excellent opportunity for a recently qualified or experienced teacher who is imaginative, creative and inspiring to work in a supportive, energetic and innovative school where students are making significant and sustained progress.

You would be joining a very good department that is on its way to outstanding.  Our results last year were 82% A*-C with 33% of students reaching A/A*.

If you are interested, please take a look at the application on the website and get in touch to ask any questions or for a tour of the school.

General Discussion / CPD Mike Gershon's Growth Mindset
« on: January 13, 2016, 09:32:32 PM »
Evening all,

Just had an email come through via TES on Mike Gershon's Growth Mindset CPD.

Has anyone had any experience of Growth Mindset CPD?  Would you recommend?

It's an online course at £40.

Be interested to hear some feedback please.  :)

Hi all,

I have just had 4 new EAL students join my GCSE class (one Greek, 2 polish and one Russian) and was wondering if anyone has produced a keyword booklet / list for students with translations?  After having attended an EAL training session, I would like to make the move to England a better one for them and so they feel more comfortable in Geography to attempt the work, after all I have to get them a GCSE in Geography.

I am more than happy to share resources in return!!  I am currently teaching OCR B but have just taught WJEC B for the past 9 years at my previous school - so let me know what you need!

If nobody has made a translation document, do you know where I could purchase one?

Thank you :-)

General Discussion / GCSE results

Hi everyone,

Could somebody tell me please when the school can access GCSE results?  We are with WJEC and was wondering when they are shown on the walled garden?

Many thanks

General Discussion / WJEC SPEC B Case Study Questions
« on: December 11, 2012, 08:53:44 PM »
Hi all,

Does anyone have a list of case study questions that have come up over the past 2/3 years in the exams for each theme please?  I have a list from 2004 - 2009 but do not have any of the past papers from recent years!
Many thanks in advance,

General Discussion / Assembly to Year 11
« on: October 10, 2011, 03:27:25 PM »
Hi all SLNers,

Sorry this is not really geography related but I'm sure some of you fab geography teachers out there have to do assemblies.  I have been asked to do my first one this Friday for the Year 11s.  I want to make it a good one - obviously but really have limited ideas at the moment.

As they are in year 11, I was thinking of doing something relating to their personal statement (which they will be needing to write soon).  Pupils are usually not very good at selling themselves or indeed showing off what they do, :) not only in school but outside of school.  However, I really do not know how to do this without it sounding too much like a lesson.

If anyone is currently doing a KS4 assembly and would be happy to share their ideas, I would be more than grateful.

Many thanks

General Discussion / Taster lesson - theme of Respect
« on: June 30, 2011, 01:21:35 PM »

Hi all,

I'm having a complete mental block of coming up with something amazing for a taster lesson I have to give to the year 6s.  We have been told there is a theme of respect for the day.  I orginally thought 'oh that's easy' but now when I'm sat down planning, I'm struggling to come up with activities for them to do which will get them enthused and look forward to geography in September!

Initial thoughts were:
looking after our environment
We only have one world
life in a shanty town

But I seriously am struggling to think of exciting activities!

Look forward to hearing your suggestions!
Many thanks

Hi all,

I have just produced a video which could be used as a starter in your lessons this week and have uploaded it to 4shared.

Hope it works!

I also have created two research templates for students, which are also in the folder.

Having had fantastic feedback from everyone, including pupils, I have uploaded it to YouTube.
Also it has been edited to show 9.0 Richter Scale!

Having just viewed it on YouTube I needed to save it in a different format to be played on big screens so you can see the new big version here!

Many thanks

General Discussion / Mixed ability groups
« on: September 08, 2010, 11:43:49 AM »
Hi all,

For the first time in my teaching, Yr 8s are not going to be set.  The tutor groups were not set in Year 7 for geography, which was fine but now I'm thinking of how to get the most out of them in Year 8.  I have put them into 3 groups for the moment of red (lower), amber (middle), green (higher ability) but that's just for my reference.  I'm not sure whether or not to sit the groups in the same area (ie. higher ability back row) or whether or not to pair them up with a learning partner (so higher ability with less able).  What do people think?

Also if I use the group idea then do I tell them or not?  I could call the groups after a landmark  ??? instead of using the colours.  Or just maybe 1, 2 and 3?!  If I use the number idea then when they pair up, could pair a pupil from 1 with pupil from 3?

I would appreciate any help or advice on this!
