Well it has not stopped raining here so am having a look at my first week planning for my new school.

I am teaching a Year 11 ASDAN group for 5 hours a fortnight looking at 'other cultures'.  They have done Brazil and South America and have been told they like controversial issues.

So, was thinking North America

Place/ people/ culture / food / famous people / famous places then either oil or seal culls or polar bear issues.

Any help would be gratefully received as I have no scheme of work or specification to work from ....

General Discussion / Cheapest house in Britain £750
« on: October 30, 2012, 06:52:57 PM »

Port Clarence was a huge part of Middlesbrough, sadly an area that is now desperately poor.

A classic interview of one of the few left living their on tonight's news said "it's safe here to live and let your kids play out on the streets" when asked if he would buy it he replied "I wouldn't give you £750 for the street". Got to love Teesside!!

General Discussion / Academy - should I be concerned?
« on: October 21, 2012, 08:17:33 PM »
Hiya folks

Slightly off topic (not Geog) but wondered if you could share your opinions - I have a job interview on Tuesday at a school that is applying to become an Academy out of choice.

The school I am at has results below the national floor targets so is likely to be an academy within a year or so anyway.

Should I be concerned about going to the new school? How has it changed life for people in schools that are already academies?

Much appreciated

Last Monday we got the ofsted call but it was deferred as Kate (and Wills but he cancelled) landed her helicopter on our school field for a local visit.

It was all very exciting but we are now in a wierd limbo of we know they are coming but they are not coming, done full huge lesson plans for a full week now and am not doing anything other than mark and plan - ie not doing my Faculty job as I haven't time.

Anyone got any advice on how quickly they're likely to come - this is worse than torture!!

From tomorrow I am stopping doing full lesson plans - so I can get other stuff done.

Crazy days.

General Discussion / This weeks floods
« on: September 26, 2012, 06:47:52 PM »
Our local news is doing a cracking job covering the floods and is having a massive discussion about floods, risk and management.

Because I am sad I am recording it. If anyone wants a copy of the DvD please email me with your addy.

Some of our students have spent the night at flood shelter as their homes are inundated. I am getting students to interview them this week for their case studies - poor kids though  :(

General Discussion / End of Year Quiz 2012
« on: June 29, 2012, 12:21:24 PM »
Hiya Folks

My way of saying thanks to everyone for keeping SLN strong for another year.  This is an amazing place. 8)

Have just finished a quiz for end of year.  Am trying to get in touch with the lovely Katharine to zip and upload it here.  I will also try my drop box but it was suspended at Christmas due to overuse with the Xmas Quiz ;D

Hopefully it will give other nice SLNers time to add rounds/modify and check my spelling!

Wishing you all a really good summer - enjoy yourselves everyone xxxxx  :-*

General Discussion / Prototype outstanding lessons
« on: March 20, 2012, 08:14:33 PM »

As part of some CPD I am getting to visit other Humanities Faculties to gain experience and share in new ideas (see my other thread).

One thing I saw today was a Faculty preparing a bank of prototype 'good with outstanding' or 'outstanding lessons' that on a no notice inspection they can use with very little stress or prep.  they were basically creating:

1. New knowledge lesson
2. Consolidation lesson
3. Past paper practise lesson

I thought this seemed a great plan. Obviously they can be used anyway, not just because there is a visit - but it may help less confident staff who would otherwise go to pieces.

Was wondering if people had any thoughts or would share strategies they would use to deliver 1 to 3 above.  I will happily share my end result once my new team are in place.

Any thoughts???

Evening folks!

I have been head of humanities for 6 years now (shesh!) and for the last three years I have been managed the Faculty with two deputies (head of re and head of hist) who have both had worsening health.

They are both now finally being replaced so my days of putting out fires and working with supply may be over - I am getting two new deputies, one for Easter and one Sept.

This seems a great opportunity to have a fresh start and stop doing things just because we do them. I am looking for a new way to lead the faculty with my two new eager beavers.

The head has given me the chance to visit a few successful Hums Faculties to see different models of leadership and basically steal the best ideas.  katharine - get kettle on!

I was just after some advice - if anyone on here has a happy vibrant Hums Fac and could take a visitor for a morning or day could you please get in touch?

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would help me see the big picture for a while and renew my positivity - any good models of how Humanities is driven forward - that would be great.

One would run RE and some cross - Fac initiatives, the other would run Hist with other Fac initiatives.
I will continue to run Geography and have overall responsibility for the Faculty.

Finally, if anyone has any really good 'success stories' could you share please? No matter how small the impact, I seem to finally be getting some time to renew my enthusiasm and think creatively...... This could be dangerous!!!

I hope this makes sense !! :-)

General Discussion / Advice for parents in supporting Geog
« on: March 05, 2012, 01:34:42 PM »

I (wierdly) have some time this week and was thinking of making an A4 flier of advice to parents in supporting their children with Geography.  One flier would be GCSE focussed and the other, more for KS3.

I will upload to 4share when done (or harrass Katharine to help me  ;D) but wondered if anyone had anything to share before I start.  Any top tips???

Muchly thanks. :)

General Discussion / Stressed out - options evening - any ideas??
« on: February 23, 2012, 08:44:46 PM »
I know this comes up every year but ours is next week and what with loads of staff off I am really struggling with ideas of what to do. We will be in a busy hall 'marketplace' style with colleges and other subjects. I have two tables and some backing boards.  I have power for laptop and have a slide show ready of pics from trips.

Any suggestions of what to put out/display would be fab.

Am really worried this year as 4 of my Y9 option groups have had supply since October due to staff absence.

Thanks in advance - any enthusiastic Geographers bored next Wednesday would be made most welcome  ;D

General Discussion / Christmas Quiz 2011
« on: December 01, 2011, 08:32:01 AM »
Morning everyone

As a thank you for another year of support, advice and generally keeping me in the loop about everything in the world of Geog, I have had a stab at another quiz - same format as before.  I am trying to find a way to upload to 4 share - it is too big at the moment to email Katharine (my technical saviour!!) but I am sure it will be up in the next couple of days.

I have used a disney round from a few years ago with the theory being the kids won't remember or have left!!

If anyone would like to add rounds/ammend or update that would be fab.  I am not precious and lacked imagination this year to create new rounds!!

Happy Christmas everyone  :-* :-*
