General Discussion / New A Level - Fieldwork Advice
« on: January 12, 2016, 06:55:20 PM »
As a school (and consortium of 3 schools) we are entering all students for the AS levels in Y12 and the A Level in Y13. This means I have to think carefully about fieldwork and its timing.  Is anyone else doing this - what have you decided upon? thought about?

My options as I see them:
1. Four day fieldwork trip in Y12 for all - to cover examined fieldwork and potential for individual investigations. Pros: wide range of topics can be covered = lots of potential data for Y13 investigations. Cons: cost (esp. if students then drop geog), length of time from fieldwork to write-up for Y13s.
2. 2 Day residential trip in Y12 for all, 2 days in summer term of Y12 (after AS exams) for individual investigations to be started over summer. Pros: Less time out in Y12, focus on each trip can be very clear towards either the exam or individual investigations. Cons: Students still have to pay for all trips and might still drop the subject!
3. Same as 2 but the 2 days in September after results. Pros: Only those who have continued with geog attend. Cons: Organising a trip for unknown numbers!  We miss the summer for write-up time.

Advice and other options I've not thought about welcome!

General Discussion / AQA GEO4B result query
« on: August 14, 2015, 11:52:34 PM »
I'm pleased with our results so this isn't a moan!

But I've downloaded the individual question marks for my cohort for this paper using ERA on eAQA and when I've totalled their raw marks the result I get varies hugely from the component result they've been given, which is what has been used for the conversion to UMS. To illustrate my issue, I had five candidates who, when I add the question marks, all got 40, but the component result they've got ranges from 33 to 42. When converted to UMS and a then the grade this is anything from a C to an A grade.

I understand scaling, but this isn't that as kids with the same raw mark have got very different marks. Our GEOG3 marks have clearly been scaled - I can see it clearly, how it has been applied and totally understand why it happens.

AQA are looking into it, but I've never seen it before in 10 years of teaching and am struggling to understand the results. I'm incredibly concerned that this could have affected grades and students university places. But also would like to understand what has happened.

Are there any examiners or more experienced teachers who might be able to suggest what's gone on?!

"Some of Britain's celebrated coastal towns are in the grip of once unimaginable levels of social breakdown as the boom in cheap foreign holidays has left its own seaside resorts swimming in crime, deprivation and unemployment.

With poverty levels up to three times the national average, many of these iconic towns have become unemployment black spots, while former hotels and guest houses are now being used to home the country's most vulnerable residents.

Ross visits the worst affected areas to investigate the human realities behind their tragic decline, and to find out what can be done to revive their fortunes."

Sounds a lot like the tourist resort life cycle model stuff I've just done with year 10!  Good timing Ross!

General Discussion / AQA Certificate
« on: November 22, 2014, 05:23:24 PM »
Hi all, we have had a major ICT disaster at school and my laptop caught a virus, from which it sadly passed away.  Unfortunately I have lost the AQA Certificate papers I downloaded after the exams. Whilst the papers are available online via eAQA they now have the copyright resources removed.  Can anyone help me out with these resources?  I have one student, who through illness, missed her controlled assessment for AQA A and is consequently being entered for the Certificate instead.

My email address is available on the left there, click the envelope to send a message. Any help gratefully received!

Emma

General Discussion / No more OfSTED grading of lessons
« on: August 31, 2014, 03:44:23 PM »
http://news.tes.co.uk/b/ofsted-watch/2014/08/29/ofsted-scraps-grades-for-individual-lessons.aspx

I wonder what the implications in school will be in terms of performance appraisal?  Could lead to some really interesting and healthy discussions about strengths and areas for development. The language used during feedback will be telling in terms of an overall judgement I imagine.

General Discussion / AS induction task
« on: June 16, 2013, 07:55:52 PM »
We have a 2 hout slot in September to provide an induction task, kids will choose one of their subjects so we can't cover anything 'important'. Any suggestions?  I don't want to do a trade game, we've thought about getting them to do some animation.  Any ideas welcomed!

General Discussion / Legacy AQA A GCSE
« on: May 17, 2013, 02:17:13 PM »
Does anyone have electronic copies of papers and inserts with the copyright images included?  I have the papers and markschemes ewlectronically but without the copyright bits and its a bit of a pain!  We didn't do this spec and are trying to plan and resource the Rocks unit which isn't really examined by other specs so this is our only source of questions.

Thanks in advance, Emma

No idea what the hotel is like, but anyone looking for a hotel in Derby could do worse than £39 a night with free parking and breakfast.  Dates of the deal include the conference.  Tripadvisor reviews here: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187048-d279597-Reviews-Hallmark_Inn-Derby_Derbyshire_England.html

General Discussion / Geological time scale?
« on: October 12, 2012, 09:37:13 PM »
My colleague will be planning the AQA A GCSE topic on rocks and I am sure I have seen a 'geological time scale in a day' thing (could have been an image or animation or website - I can't quite place it in my brain!  Along the lines of, "at midnight 'x' happens, by 3am 'y' has happened".  Can anyone help or suggest something useful?

« on: September 02, 2012, 07:07:13 AM »
I've recorded all four of the Volcano Live programmes and watched them at the time, but I haven't noted down the times of any of the useful bits!!  Does anyone have a list of times for particularly helpful bits so I don't have to re-watch four hours of programming again?  Thanks in advance, Emma

I've just succumbed and bought an Ipad and am super excited to pick it up tomorrow after school!  Off to Iceland with 42 kids on Saturday - suggestions for apps please!

I have an Iphone so have picked up a few already, but could make much more use of it if I'm honest.
