Title: What is the difference between a lead practitioner and HoD?
Post by: geogteach on February 10, 2015, 04:58:34 PM
Hi all,

Was hoping someone could shed some light on this. My assumption is a lead practitioner is concentrates on implementing oustanding teaching and teaching methods, where as a
HoD covers all bases, teaching and managing the department? However, I could be completely wrong!

That would be my interpretation too, but it will vary from school to school - there seem to be all sorts of odd names for HoD these days so it could be that they're using it to mean the same thing.

In the position to answer this as I was HoD and am now Lead Practitioner.
My LP role is Teaching and Learning and is a whole-school role.
There are five of us and our roles are developing, but so far we are mentoring NQT/UQT, working with individual courses, leading twilight sessions and CPD, assisting with observations for interviews etc.

I hope that helps.

Some Lead Practitioners in outstanding schools may be national SLEs and outreach to other schools to raise attainment and achievement by supporting and extending teaching and learning.
Not all Lead Practitioners are Subject Leaders (Heads of Department/ Leaders of Learning....), although often they are
