Title: DECEMBER 1ST- SLN upload day
Post by: sanandreasfault on November 15, 2009, 01:31:15 PM
In the spirit of sharing and restoring this forum to the collaborative and sharing forum it once was I made a suggestion on another thread to have an SLN upload day- on December 1st.  The idea being we all contribute something- an idea/resource etc and if we all do a little bit of something- it will help all of us.  Katharine has been kind enough to get the 4shared page up and running for this and will post the details (much appreciate Katharine). I've uploaded some stuff on cool geog/winter tourism to get things underway.  Let's all try and upload something- AND be professional when commenting on each others resources :)

1ST DECEMBER (or earlier if you prefer)

Come on guys!!!

I have made a 4shared account that will allow anyone to upload to it. It's 15gb so there's plenty of space for everyone to upload something!

We have suggested that December 1st is 'upload day', but the 4shared account is ready and waiting for your files. It would be great if everyone who reads this thread could upload something on or before 1st December. The URL is  http://www.4shared.com/dir/23579760/3f4bbe5b/SLN_1st_December_2009.html

Please follow these guidelines when uploading:

1. I know this sounds obvious, but name your files sensibly so that people can see quickly and easily whether or not they want to download them!

2. There is no way of telling who has uploaded things to the folder. If you want to put your name to your work, include it in the file name (eg. Ecohouse KS3 project by Katharine). If you wish to remain anonymous, that's fine.

3. If you are uploading a set of resources (eg. a PowerPoint, lesson plan and worksheet that are all used for the same lesson; a scheme of work with lesson plans and resources) please put them in a folder on your computer and zip the folder. You then upload the zipped folder and it makes it much easier for people to download quickly. The resources will also stay together as a package, helping people to use them more effectively.

4. If you download a file from the 4shared folder and you like it, please post here to say thank you. It will only take a few seconds of your time to do so but it will make a world of difference to the kind person who shared the file with you.

Hope they feel more positive soon

There is an RSS feed for the shared folder - http://www.4shared.com/rss/f/vmqktkzg - so you can easily see when files are added to the account.

I've added 3 lessons. Just be aware that I couldn't include some of the resources because they are copyrighted. They can be easily substituted for something else.

I've just downloaded your flood control lesson which looks great - thanks. I'd forgotten that multimap had that very useful hybrid mode (which you use in one of your slides) so that was a useful reminder. This will be a great resource to use with my somewhat-depleted Year 11 class tomorrow in the run up to the mocks - the more able pupils will be out doing their higher tier maths mock and I'll be working with the less able who could really do with a reminder of how to tackle decision-making answers. And we can revise responses to flooding at the same time. Bargain!
Thanks again,
Katharine

It was actually a lesson I put together for an interview, hence the plan is for 30 minutes. It was a bit of a rush as typically I was last and only had 20 minutes after the person before me went a little over her time.....it works well in a 60 min slot though. The starter video was based on Channel 5's "Megaflood" show from their "Perfect Disasters" series. I didn't include it due to copyright. It's about 6MB if you want me to email it...

Thanks for the uploads so far...thanks to the kind person who uploaded the development 'finish the photo' activity- will do this with year 10 as a starter this week- thanks :)

Hope your Y10s enjoy the finish the photo activity as much as my Y9s (and HoD) did. It certainly got a "Wow!" reaction and generated some good discussion. I would recommend gatting the photos laminated if you can and using OHT pens.

To whoever uploaded the agriculture zip file - thank you! I've not done 'word snakes' before - they'll make a really useful addition to the bank of starter activities I'm developing for colleagues across our Humanities faculty to use. So simple and easy to do, but a great way of revising key vocabulary.

I agree- the Agriculture resources uploaded are quality- thanks mr anon

Just dont answer the quiz questions out loud- you may embarrass yourself lol

As for the contributions- THANK YOU!!! We now (as I type) have 30 resources uploaded in just a few hours.  If you have uploaded thanks..if not- please contribute one resource/idea- let's see how many we can get by December 1st!!!!!

Post by: sanandreasfault on November 15, 2009, 10:17:58 PM
Hi I've put up new stuff - but old stuff is better than no stuff as newer members may not gave seen it and just because it's oldish doesn't mean it's no good because if it's new to someone else they'll teach it with a fresh attitude.

Thanks to everyone who has uploaded resources so far - the collection is growing steadily!

A reminder of the upload address:

http://www.4shared.com/dir/23579760/3f4bbe5b/SLN_1st_December_2009.html

and of the guidelines:

We're doing really well with 1-3 at the moment, but it would be great to see a bit more of no. 4!

Uploaded a load of GCSE homework booklets that may be alittle out of date now.

Also updated Adapting Lessons and 50 starters neither of which i produced but both of which were fantastic when i was a little newer to all this!  The Montana Adapting PDF was a godsend when i was an NQT and 'binball' (which has NFL style franchises everywhere thanks to our PGCE students spreading the message) and loads of my other silly tricks to dupe the kids  all started here.

In looking for something good to contribute I came upon an old favourite of mine Beaches at Risk, the link from the creator seems to have been removed - This file of PDF's is designed for KS3 however many of the resources are useful for GCSE coastal work.

I can see I will need a new hard drive and a free weekend to gather some of these wonderful contributions. Thankyou to all contributors - I will seek out some more gems. :D :D

Podders, please can you check I've killed all your files? If you click on 'time' at the top of the page it will list them in the order in which they were uploaded. Then could you add the zip files instead?
Many thanks

There are a couple of comment in the "notes" section of the powerpoint to explain video resources used.

Mr Happy is charging ahead with nearly 100 downloads however due to the way they are organised somne of you may not realise some of his friends are hiding in the same folder.

See mini sneeze and mini messy further down.  I will upload mini daydream tomorrow.  He is on a managed move to our school on a 6 week trial and made his debut helping my Year 7 class with their comparison of Kibera and Newcastle assessment!

Enjoy

Uploaded a mystery about why Portsmouth are called Pompey - there is no single definitive answer but useful to set the kids up with different information that leads them down different paths.

Old trick from mr. parkinson my history teacher at school. Give them what they think is the right answer and watch them defend their ideas with their lives!

Enjoy

4 Files, bits + pieces I have made and have used recently - a mystery based on the Derwent floods, small and could be used as an opener or review.  Transortation is a simple animated ppt to revisit river transportataion and sort out which is which. Angels + Demons; some updated wall posters, suddenly the students are talking about this again [not sure why] We have also been looking at coastal succession so there are sorting and then organising cards, I have the answers somewhere at school if not obvious - they are always hopeless at remembering a few species.

Excellent work everyone, and a fantastic idea.  I've just put a couple of our Independent Learning Tasks (ILTs) on there - they're extended homework tasks that are meant to take 10 hours work over a fortnight.  One's Year 7 (My Place in the World) and the other's Year 9 (World Development).  They include self assessment sheets and level criteria.

Thanks everyone,

Hi all. What a great idea. Have just uploaded resources for a lesson called Britain's got talent. It is the first lesson as part of a Year 7  SoW called Beautiful Britain. Idea is that the pupils watch PPT and record in a table the name of the feature and its location. (there is a table provided for less able) Pupils then use information to complete Britain's got talent poster ( I usually do on A3) Sorry for mutliple copies, havenlt uploaded before and some how ended up with more than i intended!

Morning, have added a global warming zip file.  I have used this to stretch more able year 9 students and have included some final pieces of work to show you what they came up with.  The powerpoint could be adapted for this year to get students to create a clear message to be shared with all those in attendance at the Copenhagen summit next week...  I haven't had a chance to edit for this year.

Brilliant resources shared so far.  Have checked a few... will explore more over the weekend.

Thanks

Richard

A couple more from me..

Blue Cow (CBeebies) is my heroine and a true geographer - I've added some posters I've made - brighten up your classroom!
For those not familiar with her adventures you can watch a story on: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/storymakers/stories/bluecowinplayground/
"Blue cow wonders what goes on in the outside world beyond her field. In each episode she wonders about something different."

Also a mystery - Is flooding the biggest problem facing Mozambique

This is a superb idea.... when I get a chance I will be downloading some fab resources!

I've uploaded a series of docs for lessons we have jointly developed in dept on Supervolcanoes. I am trying to develop more autonomous learning in class so this was first attempt but went down really well with my Yr 10s! Lesson plan included.

Feel free to ask if you are unsure and would like to use.

Well what a brilliant collaboration. Thanks. Sometimes this forum has had it's focus away from collaboration and sharing. Sometimes people have said all people want to do is take... This is proof that there ate many givers and there will be many hours saved as a result.

I've uploaded my first ever Google Earth with photos and 2 videos. Please don't be too critical as it is a first attempt and was very concerned it's almost a week since our trip! Please suggest hints and tips to adapt so I can also add it to my copy. I could only create links to photo's they wouldn't appear in Google Earth itself, any ideas how to do this for next time?!

I am beevering away at this! Regrettably (due to storage constranits) there have been items I have niot been able to include - namely Dan's videos, Cumbria floods and Designing plants and animals. There were a few DOCX files which I could not open.

I am just including the files (and file type) with no added information.I am putting them into alphabetical order - I would like to have structured them better but this project is taking a lot of time anyway!

If you download the office 2003 compatability pack you should be able to open these - easy to use and no worries with it really:

I agree with GeoDave, lets keep this going but rather than it just ambling on can we concentrate on another date? Perhaps this could be Feb 1st. I would quite happily open the files before then.  Might it be an idea to try Slideshare next time?  That way you could preview material before downloading; we could open an SLN slideshare group and it now includes word documents and PDFs [most files could be added as these especially if you have Open Office].  What do colleagues think?

Sounds good to me. Do you think we could do something every month? I can close the Dec 1st folder so that it doesn't accept any more files and open another one named Jan 1st if people think that this is a good idea. We could then start uploading some early Christmas presents for each other!

I think it would be great to have a new update area, either monthly or every other month onto which we can share what we have done in the intervening time. I doubt it would ever reach the size of the first December file but might be more manageable for it. Hopefully I will be able to add a few bits and pieces as well!
Title: Re: DECEMBER 1ST- SLN upload day
Post by: Katharine on January 01, 2010, 07:16:53 PM
Following suggestions from a number of colleagues I have now closed the 1st December 2009 file sharing folder. This is so that we can begin to start arranging the resources in the folder in a more logical manner. All the materials are still downloadable from the 4shared folder - http://www.4shared.com/dir/23579760/3f4bbe5b/SLN_1st_December_2009.html - and Kate has already started to upload and categorise some of the materials on the main SLN site - http://www.sln.org.uk/geography/december_1st_download_day.htm

There are an amazing variety of top quality resources available in the 1st December folder - there are 241 files and folders that have been shared! Well done and thank you to everyone who took part and shared their materials - I think that this kind of generosity is what makes SLN such a special community. Thank you also to everyone who posted to say 'thanks' to colleagues who had created the files. The most popular files to date are the Christmas Quizzes, which I am sure kept thousands of children and their teachers entertained in the run up to the holidays.

As the December upload project was so successful, I'm suggesting that we do it again! I have made a new folder - SLN 1st February 2010 - in the same account at 4shared, so please do upload your files. The link is: http://www.4shared.com/dir/26986045/87915688/SLN_February_2010.html - please try to upload something by 1st February if you can.

The same 'rules' apply as before:

Thank you Katherine for stepping into the breech again and keeping this going, is it worthwhile starting the sticky thread again also?  Regarding 'ownership' you can easily link your name by ensuring the properties tab is completed.  File > Properties > Summary - you can add your name company/school, any tags for searching and comments [such as 'based on an idea from Tony'].  It is also worth ticking the show preview box before saving and then you will also get a nice icon shown if you look at the folder in thumbnail mode.  Roll on Feb 1st ...

You may also add a creative commons page at the end of ppts if you wish to keep control over creativity, of course.

Would anyone be up for making some kind of shared google drive account or something and we can all use it and upload resources to?
