Title: What has happened to your Woolworths?
Post by: Kate Russell on November 09, 2009, 11:06:21 AM
The closure of Woolworths almost a year ago, changed the face of many high streets as the premises were so large and generally in a prominent location. I have been meaning to post here for months to find out what is happeniong around the country - what is your former Woolworths now?

Stafford - Sports Direct (temporary)

Telford - remains empty

Alnwick - M and Co (formerly McKays)

Dorchester - now Wellworths run by former employees of Woolworths

Newport, Shropshire - B&M stores

Must say I was very surprised, as a first time visitor, at how run down Newhaven was when I was there April/May time this year.

Wanstead: soon to be Tesco....

South Woodford: a large Polish supermarket.

Each interesting in their own way. Massive opposition to the Wanstead Tesco.

I am interested in how people are using this thread, a lot of possibilities.

Bury St Edmunds still empty but all covered up and building work taking place, so much speculation.

There have been lots of empty units in the town because of the opening of the 'arc' shopping centre, but despite my (and others) fears we haven't got loads of pound shops.

Next time you come up to Aldeburgh you'll find half the high street is now about the same as that. I miss the local shops for local people...

Fat Face seem to be on a spree in the East - Beccles and Southwold recently got branches as well.

I have the inside story - they have new management and have a new marketing strategy with many more stores aiming at younger people - smaller sizing etc. Won't go into details, but suffice to say that most shop management have 'left'.

I was in Aldeburgh a week or two ago - all art galleries and Ladies clothes shops these days. Paid £2.20 for an ice cream! Was only £1.20 at Felixstowe the other day and you get a flake - I went to Felixstowe to photograph the donkeys back on the seafront for the first time in 50 years and was mildly impressed by the air of revamp.
