Title: Geography FM- Fancy meeting you here?
Post by: Tony Cassidy on April 19, 2009, 12:08:04 AM
Please humour me as I explain this one...
Sometime ago myself and Noel discussed the use of flash meeting (http://flashmeeting.e2bn.net/)  (online conferencing with the use of a webcam or microphone) by edtechroundup ( http://edtechroundup.wikispaces.com/ )and wondered whether a similar model would be suitable for the Geographical community.

We discussed the flash meeting as an opportunity to share classroom practice, from the simple to the complex, with the aim of drawing in a range of pedagogical approaches from a variety of teachers.  We believed such as approach should be open all Geography practitioners.

After a couple of attempts we managed to gain a flash meeting account and subsequently had a play with the technology.

As a result we would like to invite fellow colleagues to Geography FM’s visit meeting on Thursday 23rd of April 8.00 p.m. – 9.00 p.m. .

Details about Geography FM can be found on the wiki

http://geographyfm.pbwiki.com/

Details of the first meeting can be found here.

http://geographyfm.pbwiki.com/Thursday-23rd-of-April-2009

The meeting will include feedback from the G.A. conference, the use of Twitter in the classroom and QR codes (Yes I don’t know what they are either!).

What do you need to do to attend?

Please request access to edit the Wiki, when permission is received, add your name to the attendees by editing it. If you feel brave and want to speak about a resource, topic or issue, please add to the agenda.
The web address for the meeting will be added to the Wiki on Thursday.

We are limited to a number of 20, but have the possibility of increasing numbers; we will also record the meeting so that they can be viewed online.

This is open to everyone, whatever your perspective or experience, it’s also a good laugh.

Hope to see you here. (I nicked that one from Tom).

Please let me know of any issues or questions on this thread.

Sounds interesting - I've requested access to edit the wiki.
How good does my webcam need to be for this to work? I need to go and buy it this afternoon...

Looking forward to it!!  ;D

Katharine, although it is better to have a webcam, it is possible to join in with just a microphone.  If you go and buy one, however, you can try out augmented reality too!!! ;)  You can get a reasonable one for £10-15.

Just like to urge people who may be dithering to give it a go. The first time in a Flash meeting is always a little strange, but it's a great way to explore video-conferencing within a well-structured and supportive environment. Could be the start of something really good.

I'd like to congratulate Tony (I don't do Conferences) Cassidy for the huge amount of time and effort he's put into this initiative.

Noel

Have just emailed the Head of ICT to see if he can lend me a webcam for Thursday. If it works well, I'll go and buy one.
I don't suppose you can use a normal video camera for this, can you?

Hello Tony, sounds much more interesting than ending up watching 'Coast' (yet again) at 8pm next Thursday.  I didn't make the GA Conference this year, have not caught onto Twitter properly yet, and I haven't got a clue about QR codes either.....so some "catch-up" would be welcome.

Incidentally, although it's much better to have webcam and/or  mike for the flashmeeting, it isn't obligatory and you can just join and watch/listen and type in your comments in the so-called "back channel". I do it all the time on ETRU cos I iz shy  :)
Title: Re: Geography FM- Fancy meeting you here?
Post by: Katharine on April 19, 2009, 12:08:35 PM
What is ETRU? (hate to think I'm missing out on something!)
Title: Re: Geography FM- Fancy meeting you here?
Post by: Victoria on April 19, 2009, 12:23:13 PM
ETRU is EdTech Roundup - think it began via Twitter, or at least that is how I came to know about it.  It's a group of people (some IT teachers, some consultant type people, and some teachers of subjects other than ICT who might have responsibility for e-Learning and suchlike in their schools) who FlashMeet on a Sunday evening and talk about all manner of edtechy type things.  I've "lurked" at a few of them and picked up some interesting bits and pieces, but a lot of it is over my head (although there is talk of a "newbies" version soon...).

If you look at the link to the ETRU wiki in Tony's first post, you can see the agendas and minutes and watch replays of the meetings.

On Sunday 26th there is a VLE special discussing the pros and cons of different VLEs (.8.30 onwards) which might be of interest to some of you. Alternatively tonight it is on usual time 8.30  and if you popped in for ten minutes it might give you a chance to test out your equipment and get a feel for Flashmeeting in time for the Real McCoy on Thursday ;)  Link here http://flashmeeting.e2bn.net/fm/8322b8-6083

So it's a bit like an online conference ten Tony ;-)

Just kidding! Great work on this Tony and I'll be looking forward to Thursday. I would also encourage others to join in - even if it's just to listen. The energizing effect of just chatting to like minded individuals is fantastic.

A great idea, really looking forward to it. Dead simple to get involved and only basic kit needed (I have a really cheap webcam, which seems to do the job fine). Relaxed atmosphere... bring your own wine (it is thirsty Thursday!)

Like other members- I am a novice at this and I think it will be way over my head too. But am prepared to give this interesting concept a go.
Glass of wine in hand and will be ready to go for 'Thirsty Thursday'
BTW Thanks for the great idea.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the positive feedback and to the people who have already requested access to the Wiki.

I'm sorry if I made the first post of the thread seem complicated  ??? , my fault.  :-[

Please don't feel it's above your head, it isn't- I can cope with it  :). A web address will be given- you sign in and sorted... if there are any technical issues we can help each other out. It's part of the fun.

Please also feel welcome to attend, whether you want to contribute, listen or watch. Whether new teacher, experienced teacher, HOD, etc...

Hopefully this will develop into a community event, so please feel free to change the agenda and make meeting suggestions.

For the people who are thinking that this sounds like it is "over their heads", there is a demo facility on the flashmeet site.  As well as allowing you to test your webcam/microphone, it lets you see what the flashmeet willl look like, and hovering over various different features (eg the chat, broadcast button, etc.) brings up a box telling you what that feature does.  It is dead straightforward and will be well worth coming along, even if it's as a "lurker" at first!

Good idea Littlemiss, when you do a demo it is private... so you can mess around with the application without fear.

I was shocked when it was mentioned that new Nokias had a QR reader, and then disappointed that my 6300 didn't have one.  I followed the link via the PE pages to the Kaywa reader but it wasn't available for my new phone.  I then had a Pepsi moment and via their site was directed to http://www.i-nigma.com/personal/GetReader.asp open the site from your phone [not via opera] and the reader is sent straight back.  I then used the content generator to start playing, fantastic and really far more straighforward than I realised.  Looking forward to geo-caching, orienteering, printing clues on stickers, stickers with comments on them directed at students after marking thier books ...

Does anybody have a link to QR content generator software which I can download please.  I can generate on line but I think students may stay on task better if I can separate this task from our poor rural internet.  I am thnking along the QR word wall continuum.

I also contemplated putting on a shirt and tie and pretending I was a teacher.

Title: Re: Geography FM- Fancy meeting you here?
Post by: aberrantbee on April 23, 2009, 10:36:17 PM
Was thinking of getting the students to generate the code, a little like consequences, by making up different segements of a process.  The text could be saved as QR codes so they had to decipher the cards to put into the right order.  That way we could manage with less readers.  I have manged to sucessfully output the codes from the internet at home but wondered if there was a non-internet way of generating the codes at school.  That way we could utiise lap and desk tops in class to generate the clues, one or two readers and this might provide the inspiration for the students to download thier own readers onto their phones.  [and we wouldn't have to book the computer room also]

Post by: Victoria on April 23, 2009, 10:51:17 PM
Ah, ok.  That's an interesting idea.  Linking back to what we were saying earlier though, what would be the benefit of using QR code for this, rather than just getting students to write parts of a process and then sequence them?

Not sure about a non-internet way of generating the codes - sorry.

I have just watched your meeting and its really fascinating - I'd read this thread before and didn't fully understand what  it was all about - I have found that it is only through watching the video that it made sense to me.
Your meeting was a really interesting debate and all involved expressed a range of views so well - would be a great showing at a departmental meeting - especially for teachers who do not get out and about much or meet other colleagues (for whatever reason.)
Thank you to those who have set this up and taking geographers to the next stage of online collaboration and networking.
(Just a thought, do the ICT teaching community use such technology?)  ???

Thanks Noel, saved me a job for the weekend- do you teach on thursday? ;)

Thanks Kate, I'd really like to encourage people to join in with this group, whatever your viewpoints or experience. From the last two meets I have come away with so many ideas.

It seems a little mental to spend an hour after work doing this, but it is quality CPD, listening to other practitioners and their ideas, getting feedback and suggestions on your ideas in a supportive environment, as well as learning about web conferencing and the collaborative use of a Wiki.

If you want to ease yourself in, please just request Wiki access and next meeting sign up. Happy to encourage people via email or personal msges on the forum.

I'd like to get to the point where I turn up and can't get in...

Thanks for another good meeting -best CPD going where I can drink a glass of wine - listen to some really good discussions - and occasionally contribute and mark my Yr 7 QCA maths papers at the same time!

Great meeting - lovely to hear all you guys - isolation can be good but nice to hear real voices for a change! look forward to promised additions to the wiki - I have a slightly different slant to the rest of you - was trying to see how I can adapt doorstep geography to a worldwide back yard. I have done a fair bit with my Y7 but I am having problems pushing it higher up. The Open textbook is also on my mind.
